#695 Monday 10 September

Massage .... wonderful!  Zoe took point with Kaylia last night while AJ, Naomi and I went out for a relaxing dinner .... no pressure from KK .... followed by an hour of aromatherapy massage.  I went soundly to sleep during the massage ... very good.  Naomi says the snoring was bad!
.
Now .... today ......
In the morning, Zoe and AJ went to Ubud ... I'll let them fill in the story of their trip.  Naomi did painting stuff (repainting the black bricks around the showers) and I had Kaylia.  She and I went down to the little beach and went from one breakwater to the next ... about 300 metres.  A lot of this was floating in the shallow water, stopping to sing "Row, row, row your boat ...." and so on.  I saw two live sea urchins!  The first time in my life ... so it is quite an event for me.  I've seen many sea urchin shells but never a live one.  We also stopped several times for Kaylia to practice greeting people .... "Hello .... my name is Kaylia."
After lunch the Mercure Gang arrived to help with the wiring fault .... which of course had fixed itself .... so we couldn't find the fault!   So instead we tried to find out why a particular light fitting has never worked ... and found a switch that doesn't connect to anything .... we found cables that don't appear to connect any where .....  truly the builders of this villa were amazingly bad.  In the bathroom, we have two switches that do nothing, in the passage a light fitting that doesn't work, in the bedroom we have cables poking out the wall that don't do anything.  And at the front of the villa we have three or four lights that don't work.  Great!
.
Then it was wire brushing the steel lids (of the pool equipment underground rooms) so they could be repainted .... my choice of colour this time .... bright yellow!
.
By this time A and Z were back and Naomi and I had a trip to Ace in Kuta to get some more paint and other supplies.  I now have an 'Ace Member Card'!  I'm almost a local!  On the way back to the villa we just HAD to stop at Puri Mas bakery ..... the banana bread loaf is a compulsory purchase.
Soon we will be off for a meal .... just the two of us ..... wow!
.
A.J. here! Zoe and I drove with Made to Ubud. Zoe and I were both very tired and napped during the car ride. We stopped at a lovely jewellery shop which produces its own silver jewellery. The lady working there explained that the silver is imported from Borneo and the Balinese silver workers add metals to it to make it stronger. I am a fidgeter so I do not really buy jewellery to wear but Zoe was in heaven. She found a very cute silver necklace and got the price down from 2 million rupiah to 1.25! Apparently it was the "morning price", a sale from the first customer of the day is good luck in Bali.
.
On our way to Ubud we passed a loooong street of wood carvings, house furnishings, furniture in the woodcarving district of Bali. I wanted to spend a whole day just walking along and buying everything for a house I don't have yet! Once we made it to the rice terraces we were surprised at how beautiful they were. Made made sure to tell us not to talk to the aggressive shopkeepers as they will follow us to sell us things. I ended up buying two beautiful "batiks". While were in Ubud we noticed it was very touristy, more so than Sanur. Naomi explained this is where Eat, Pray, Love was filmed so that explained a lot!
.
We took Kaylee to Pizza Hut so Ian and Naomi could have a quiet meal together without Kaylee wanting to leave as soon as she is  finished. While we were ordering our drinks we asked Kaylee what she wanted to drink and she said "water!" This is a bit unusual for her, but Zoe and I went with it, of course when the water came she didn't drink it, opting instead for a delicious strawberry and watermelon drink. I think she was answering the question as "What do you drink when you are thirsty?" as opposed to what she really wanted to drink. She knows that people do drink water when they are thirsty, but she is not one of those girls! It was a good answer either way!
.
It has been wonderful being here in Bali! Ian and Naomi have been very generous in the amount of free time that they give us to explore this country. When Z and I watch Kaylee it is mostly in the pool, an activity we both enjoy so it is pretty wonderful!
