#705 Saturday 22 Sept

The happy dog!

The day was good .... Much car trips ... In the afternoon we visited Aunty Max and Kaylia had her usual bath! Despite an attack of pain she had a good time. The pain attacks are worrying .... she is difficult to diagnose because she doesn't tell us what is hurting. I'll check with the doctor to make sure that the recent x-rays didn't show anything than the constipation.
This maybe something that we can communicate with Kaylia about now .... her level of speech has improved a lot .... it will be worth a try.

#704 Friday 21 Sept

Another bad night .... I slept through the time for the 'midnight run' .... she wet the bed .... then woke hours later at 3am cold and wet.  She was then awake for the rest of the night .... and we were reminded that being dragged in and out of sleep is even worse then being awake.
.
The notes below are for Kaylia's therapy (thanks to Kat!)  .... it gives you an idea of her current  level of speech ability.
-------------------------------------------------------------------

It is our intention to have Kaylee use increased language in requesting within her natural environment…and also in responding to questions about her activities.

“Give me ______”
At any opportunity when Kaylee is wanting you to give her something, have Kaylee use the words to ask for it, before you give it to her. She may require a prompt – just say “give” and she should know what she is to say. If she does not, say what you want her to say, eg. “give me mentos”

We have also been working on Kaylee saying “please” and “thankyou as separate words, rather than her version of “thankyouplease” all being one word.
Example – she says “thank you AJ/Daddy/Mummy/Zoe”

“Open______”
Example – Kaylee needs something opened. You ask, “What do you want me to do?” She responds “Open ______ please”

“Close______”
Example – Kaylee gets in the car. You ask, “what do you want me to do now?” She responds “Close the door”

“Switch On/Off”
When entering/leaving a room you can stop her at the door and ask what she would like you to do. She should respond “Switch light on”, or may even say “Turn light on”.

If Kaylee wants you to join her in an activity, or to go somewhere – encourage her to say Come here”. Perhaps if you are going out and she notices you haven’t moved towards leaving, she can ask “Come here”

When you are taking Kaylee out – ask her questions
Q: “Where are we going?
Kaylee: “To the ____________”
Encourage Kaylee to use ALL the words in her response

Q: “How are we getting to the _________?
Kaylee: “Driving in the car”

If Kaylee goes out with someone else – someone at home on her return can ask
Q: “Where did you go?
Kaylee: “We went to the ________”

Q: “What did you do?
Kaylee: “We went swimming/rode on the scooter, went on the swing”
(encourage more words, rather than just saying “scooter”)

#703 Thursday 20 Sept

It's early morning ..., it's raining outside and the birds are singing. At this time of the year rain can be warm ... since we now have a family member who likes to go walking in the rain, warm rain can be very nice!
.
Kaylia is spending a lot of therapy time working on speech .... she has reached the stage where she is easily able to speak in complete sentences but she has 'trained' us to understand her if she just says one word. So she just says one word! We now must retrain ourselves to insist that she say the full sentence. It's hard.
.
Yesterday Zoe was introduced to Kaylia at the skate park on her scooter. Her scooter skills are steadily improving. Each time she starts from a little higher on the slope. She watches the other kids on their scooters closely. An interesting development .... she now is less interested in 'scootering' if there are no other kids around! She wants the social contact!

My thoughts are meandering along the path of the nature of autism ... that anxiety is the key factor.  That the preoccupation with the internal world, with stimming .... they are all a response to .... or a defense against anxiety.
.
As we have been able to reduce the anxiety, so the effects of 'A' diminish.  It's a theory ... I'll see what Naomi thinks.

#702 Wednesday 19 Sept

It's time to sing the praises of Zoe and AJ !!  Last night Naomi and I had a really good "night off" .... coffee at tthe Dome followed by a movie (the Bourne Legacy)  .... the night was helped by the fact that the movie was top ..... we came away feeling as though we'd had a good break.  .... and for a change Kaylia actually slept!  Usually (when we go out) she refuses to sleep and waits till we get home .... but I think she feels so attached to Zoe that she felt able to sleep.
.
We have put in place a meal-preparation rota .... we each have one night a week where we take responsibility for preparing the evening meal .... and on the other two night we go to Nandos!

#701 Tuesday 18 September

Woo oo oooh  ..... wot a nite!  She didn't go to sleep till 10pm and then she woke at 3am and she was wide awake!  She went downstairs to play and was playing noisily till 6:30am when she came upstairs again.  She was playing right outside Zoe's door ... but Zoe slept right through it!!  (Amazing)  Naomi and I both feel like death warmed up .....   I think Kaylia will probably crash at some point today.
.
Yesterday's therapy was good ..... the way that Kaylia plays is changing.  She seems to be looking for social contact more .... and she wants to play with a variety of toys rather than stimming off just one toy.  It's a continuation of the changes that we noticed while we were in Bali.  We're not sure what it means yet .... but it seems to be heading in the right direction.
.
There was an interesting email yesterday from a researcher at the Telethon Institute .... they have reviewed a range of complimentary and alternative therapies which are aimed at autism ... assessing the research basis, method, results etc.  It was significant that very few actually have a good result .... about half of the therapies have no benefit but do no harm ...... and a number of therapies have no benefit and are classed as unsafe.  It seems to me that the supporters of the therapies are chasing 'feel good' therapies.

#700 Monday 17 September

Wow ... I missed two days!  Ooops
What happened?  Saturday was therapy in the morning followed by swimming at the Bayswater Waves pool .... then to the Midland office for play time.  Shopping then home to cook tea .... Kaylia's favourite 'spugutti'  (the way daddy makes it) ... yum.  Then crash .... she dragged me off to her room to sleep.
Sunday .... movies!  We went to "Tinkerbell" and it was a milestone ... the first time she has been able to sit through the whole movie.... she needed the timer for the final 10 minutes but it was still a great effort.  In the afternoon, she accepted that we weren't going anywhere and played .....
.
Today?  She is off at school again .... very happy.  Zoe has been to the local Montessori school to introduce herself.  I tagged along as I had never seen a Montessori school before .... I am impressed!
