#225 Wednesday 13 April 2011

It's an hour before school time ... so it's cuddle time while watching DVDs. Naomi has left for uni a while ago. Kaylia obviously likes this time .... I have to write with her lounging all over me!

Today I've reduced the Lovan by 40% to test whether the previous dose has been too high and producing some symptoms of excess seratonin .... agitation and elevated temperature. If she show less "nagging" behaviour, this may be the case. The nagging can also be a routine that she has absorbed .... so it wouldn't change.

A little later: interrupted by a request for "slee" .... after some trial and error, I worked out that she meant grilled cheese on vegemite toast. We've been having this as a weekend treat lately and it's apparently become a favourite!

This illustrates the language dilemna ... do we give her speech therapy or behaviour therapy ... costs dictate that doing both therapies would mean that neither one will be done enough to be really effective ....
(interrupted by a request "ah wa u mo" "I want some more.")
Which to do? Speech without being able to think isn't good .... behaviour without speech is a problem ....
(... another request for more!)

  1. G'day Ian,

One thing I've found really helpful in determining whether or not to do artic work is to record something that Kaylia says on a dictophone/recording software... and play it to:

    a) a total stranger.
    b) someone who knows kaylie, but hears it out of context.

I've always found it really enlightening as you can discover that something that's crystal clear in one context doesn't have much meaning in another. Remember that behaviourists can shape artic too - and much of shaping artic is just about placing demands!
